This Highfield Level 3 Award in the Safe Use of Mechanical Restraints (Handcuffs) (RQF) is a high-quality programme for SIA licence holders in the correct and lawful use of mechanical restraints. Developed based on Highfield's position as a leader for qualification development, the course addresses the scrutiny surrounding the use of restraints. Aimed at SIA licence holders, civil enforcement and community safety accredited persons, it expands knowledge in the safe and lawful application of mechanical restraints while covering relevant law and legislation. Syllabus / modules

  • Understand the different types of mechanical restraints (handcuffs)
  • Understand the law and good practice guidelines in relation to the use of mechanical restraints (handcuffs)
  • Understand the importance of safe working practices and how to respond to medical difficulties
  • Understand post-incident considerations and the importance of reporting
  • Be able to safely apply and remove mechanical restraints (handcuffs) to a compliant subject
  • Be able to safely apply and remove mechanical restraints (handcuffs) to a non-compliant subject

Entry requirements

Learners must be 18+ years old; hold a valid SIA Door Supervisor or Close Protection Licence; communicate fluently in spoken and written English; wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical scenario-based training. This course includes physical and practical training — inform Close Protection Academy of any injury/medical condition before attending.
